This relief “Achilles and Priam” patinated in bronze is a reproduction made from an original by the sculptor Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), based on a scene from the Iliad where Priam, the king of Troy, begs the powerful Achilles to return the body of his son Hector, killed in combat against the Achaean hero.
The Iliad is one of the two epic poems attributed to Homer, whose composition is dated to the 8th century BC. This poem recounts the events of the tenth and final year of the Trojan War. In the 24 books of this poem, the oldest in European literature, Homer addresses themes such as glory, honor, and human tragedy.
The Iliad begins with the poet invoking the muse and narrating the wrath of the Greek hero Achilles, whose withdrawal from combat brings devastating consequences for the Achaean army, including the death of his cousin Patroclus at the hands of the Trojan prince Hector. Achilles takes revenge by killing Hector in combat and dragging his corpse tied to his chariot until King Priam comes to the Achaean warrior’s tent, begging him to return his son’s body for a proper burial.
