Description
Model of the Puerta del Sol of Toledo, made of stone reconstituted with resin.
Dimensions: 11 cm (width) x 11 cm (height) x 6 cm (depth).
The original gate was located in the walled enclosure of the Islamic medina, which seems to have been the main access from the northern suburb. Its tripartite structure, in which the central body was slightly recessed, was built with reused ashlars that can still be seen on the inside of the passageway.
The current building, in which there are very few traces of the building’s Islamic affiliation, is the result of the rebuilding ordered by Archbishop Tenorio at the end of the 14th century, after the Castilian civil wars.
The gateway is made up of two sections crowned by merlons, in which the passageway, a room and the roof are located. Stylistically linked to the Modéjar style of Toledo, a pointed horseshoe arch was built over the old passageway, and above it two blind arcades of interlaced arches.
