Alcántara Bridge, Cáceres. The art developed by the Romans in Hispania obeyed the same aesthetic and propagandistic characteristics that defined their artistic manifestations in other territories of the Empire. The Iberian Peninsula, given its economic importance, was soon dotted with grandiose works of an official, monumental and practical nature. The result of this domination was the creation of an extensive road network with bridges to cross the course of the different rivers.
One of these roads connected the present-day cities of Cáceres and Coimbra (Portugal). On this route, in the 2nd century AD, the Alcántara Bridge (Cáceres) was built, one of the most perfect engineering works left by the Romans in our country.
