Description
Model of the Portico of Santa María de Sangüesa, made of marble reconstituted with resin.
Measurements: 18 x 8 x 22 cm.
Portico of Santa María de Sangüesa, Navarre. Its position on the border with the kingdom of Aragon and its status as a stage on the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela make Sangüesa one of the main historical-artistic enclaves in Navarre. The church of Santa María la Real was built on the site of the palace that Sancho Ramírez ordered to be built next to the bridge, with its magnificent southern doorway, which has become one of the outstanding works of Navarrese Romanesque architecture.
In the lower part there are six statue-columns representing the Three Marys and three apostles, one of them with the inscription ‘Judas Mercator’. The pointed archivolts that form the doorway are decorated with apostles, prophets, monks, artisan trades, musicians, minstrels, etc. All of this is framed by mouldings decorated with geometric and vegetal designs.
On the tympanum is the Last Judgement, on the lintel is the Virgin and Child accompanied by several apostles, and in the spandrels of the arches is a motley decoration of sculptures arranged in apparent disorder. The façade is finished off with the Pantocrator and the apostles arranged under a semicircular arch.
