The territories under the rule of the Roman Empire benefited from a unified system of weights and measures. In the forums of the cities, the mensa ponderania, with the standards of measurement, were kept. The main units of measurement for weight were the pound and the ounce, with 12 ounces being equivalent to one pound. The perfection of the Roman balance, whose use has survived to the present day, favoured the measurement of weights, which was essential for trade.
