The winged horse Pegasus was born from the spurt of blood that flowed when the hero Perseus cut off the head of Medusa, one of the three Gorgon sisters, who turned anyone who looked at her into stone. The horse Pegasus is usually depicted in white or black with two wings that allow it to fly. A characteristic of its flight is that when it flies, it moves its legs as if it were actually running through the air. According to classical sources, Perseus did not actually fly mounted on Pegasus, as he flew using winged sandals; however, many artists have depicted him flying on this horse since the Renaissance.
