The sculptures of the Parthenon, the temple of Athena Parthenos located on the Acropolis of Athens, were made of Pentelic marble by the school of Phidias in the 5th century BC (from 447 BC to 438 BC). The sculptural sets were: the two East and West pediments, which showed the birth of Athena and the dispute with Poseidon respectively; the metopes, located below the pediments, reliefs with scenes of the battle against the centaurs and the Amazons; and the friezes, low reliefs that surrounded the perimeter of the inner temple or cella, in which the great procession of the Panathenaea, a festival in honor of the patroness of the city of Athens, the goddess Athena, was represented.
The friezes of the Parthenon are a series of low reliefs, approximately one meter in height and with a total length of 160 meters, that surrounded the perimeter of the temple. These pieces were located at the top of the Parthenon’s cella, and they depicted the great procession of the Panathenaea, a festival in honor of the city’s patroness, the goddess Athena. In the frieze reliefs, the participants in the procession appear, led by maidens carrying embroidered peplos as offerings to the goddess, along with other characters such as aristocrats and magistrates, common people with their offerings, musicians, high-ranking military officers, soldiers, and horsemen.
