Reproduction of a statue from ancient Egypt, representing a married couple.
Inspired by a figure from the 13th century BC on display in the Neues Museum in Berlin, which portrays the royal scribe Amenemope and his wife Hathor. The original figure is of polychrome wood and was found at Deir el Medina, west of Thebes, dated to the reigns of Seti I and Ramesses II, 19th Dynasty, 1290-1213 BC.
Statues depicting married couples are common in Egyptian art. They are usually depicted either standing or seated, as in this case, embracing each other. Marriage in ancient Egypt was a fundamental institution, in which women enjoyed an importance and status unheard of in antiquity.
