Relief of Justice. Reproduction of an oval medallion with a representation of Justice as a blindfolded woman holding a balance scale and a sword in the other hand.
Since the 15th century, Lady Justice has often been depicted with blindfolded eyes. The blindfold represents objectivity, in which justice is, or should be, imposed objectively, without fear or favoritism, regardless of identity, money, power, or weakness; blind and impartial justice. The earliest Roman coins depict Iustitia (Justice in Latin) with the sword in one hand and the scale in the other, but with eyes uncovered. Justice is commonly only depicted as “blind” from the late 15th century onwards. The earliest known representation of Blind Justice is Hans Giengen’s 1543 statue on the Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen (Fountain of Justice) in Bern.
Decorating with reproductions of reliefs from classical art, like this Justice medallion, is a timeless way to beautify any space. These pieces, capturing the magnificence of ancient sculpture, add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any environment in our homes, both indoors, in libraries, living rooms, offices, or studies, as well as outdoors, in gardens and terraces.
