Olympian Gods Disk, mounted on a wooden frame. The twelve gods of Olympus according to Greek and Roman mythology are represented. In the center of the disk appears Zeus, the father of gods and men. Surrounding him are Venus, Apollo, Vesta, Demeter, Vulcan, Hera, Poseidon, Athena, Mars, Artemis, and Hermes.
In Greek mythology, Zeus was the son of two Titans, Cronus and Rhea. Cronus (Time) had castrated and overthrown his father, Uranus, the god of the Sky. Fearing that one of his children would do the same to him, Cronus began to devour them as soon as Rhea gave birth to them. When Zeus was born, Rhea gave Cronus a stone to devour instead of his son, hiding Zeus in a cave in Crete. When Zeus reached adulthood, he confronted his father, freed his siblings, and established himself as the king of the gods on Mount Olympus.
The twelve Olympian gods represented in this disk are:
Children of Cronus:
- Zeus (Jupiter), god of lightning and thunder, father and king of gods and men.
- Hera (Juno), wife of Zeus and goddess of the sky, guardian of marriage, social order, and oaths.
- Poseidon (Neptune), brother of Zeus and Hera, god of the seas and earthquakes.
- Demeter (Ceres), goddess of the Earth and crops.
- Hestia (Vesta), sister of Zeus, goddess of the sacred fire of the hearth.
The next group is the children of Zeus:
- Ares (Mars), god of war, son of Zeus and Hera.
- Hephaestus (Vulcan), god of fire and blacksmiths, son of Zeus and Hera.
- Aphrodite (Venus), goddess of Love.
- Apollo, god of light, arts, medicine, and prophecy.
- Artemis (Diana), twin sister of Apollo, goddess of the moon, maidens, and the wild nature.
- Athena (Minerva), goddess of war and Wisdom.
- Hermes (Mercury), messenger of the gods.
