Reproduction of a statuette of the god Neptune. The god of the sea, Poseidon, Neptune for the Romans, was the brother of Zeus and played a leading role in various myths, one of the best known being his struggle with Athena for the patronage of Athens, an episode that is depicted on one of the pediments of the Parthenon. His attribute is the trident and his animal is the horse, and he is often depicted on a chariot drawn by horses or by fantastic sea animals.
