Chinese art uses a variety of materials, including bronze, jade and ceramics, in terracotta and porcelain. The most spectacular and famous terracotta figures are those of the Xian Warriors, more than 8,000 life-size statues of soldiers and horses that were discovered during the excavation of the tomb of the first emperor (3rd century BC). In addition to these sculptures, porcelain and terracotta were used to depict smaller figures of anonymous people in everyday scenes.
