Moses by Michelangelo. The statue we reproduce on a small scale is the famous sculpture made by the brilliant Italian sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564).
Created between 1513-1536, Michelangelo’s Moses statue is one of the masterpieces of Renaissance art. With dimensions of 2.35 m, the original sculpture is located in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli (Rome), since its placement in the 16th century. Although originally conceived to be placed in the tomb of Pope Julius II in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, the Rovere family, from which the Pope originated, ultimately designated this sculpture to the church they patronized, where it remains to this day.
It was said that upon finishing it, faced with such perfection, Michelangelo struck his work’s knee, urging it with the command: “Speak!”; such is his mastery that Moses seems to come to life at any moment, to rise and walk.
Michelangelo Buonarroti, known simply as Michelangelo, is one of the most influential artists in the history of sculpture and art in general, and one of the great geniuses of the Renaissance. Born in 1475 in Caprese, Italy, Michelangelo left a lasting legacy through his great masterpieces in sculpture, painting, and architecture. Among his creations are the David, the Moses, the Vatican Pieta, as well as his murals in the Sistine Chapel, where he painted the ceiling with biblical scenes, with the creation of Adam being one of the highlights.
