Mosaics are pictorial works made with small pieces of stone, ceramic, glass, or other similar materials in various shapes and colors, called tesserae, joined together with plaster or other binders to form decorative geometric or figurative compositions.
This mosaic is currently crafted entirely by hand, following the ancient Roman technique of “opus tessellatum,” using cubic stone tesserae.
In its creation, 8 mm tesserae of natural stones and marbles of different colors were used. It is mounted on mortar with a metal structure, ready to be hung on a wall or used as floor tiling.
Mosaic with rose of the winds, featuring a star with the four cardinal points: North, East, South, and West, as well as the four intermediate directions: Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, and Northwest.
The Romans adopted the art of mosaics from Greece and Asia Minor from the 2nd century B.C. following the conquest of these regions. This decorative art was so successful that it became an essential element in the decoration of Roman domus among the upper classes. The decorative motifs of Roman mosaics were highly varied, ranging from geometric figures to images representing elements of nature, such as trees, gardens, and landscapes, or scenes with human figures based on mythology or domestic life.
