Mosaics are pictorial works created with small pieces of stone, ceramics, glass, or other similar materials of various shapes and colors, called tesserae, which are joined together using plaster or another binder to form decorative geometric or figurative compositions.
This mosaic is currently made entirely by hand, following the ancient Roman technique of “opus tesellarium,” a mosaic of cubic stone tesserae.
The mosaic is made using 8mm tesserae of natural stones and marbles of different colors, fixed onto a mortar with a metal structure. Ready to be hung on the wall or used as flooring.
Mosaic with the inscription “Veni Vidi Vinci,” a phrase from the Roman general Julius Caesar, beneath a drawing of a victory laurel crown and a Roman gladius sword.
The Romans adopted the art of mosaics from Greece and Asia Minor from the 2nd century BC after the conquest of these regions. The success of this decorative art was so great that it became an essential element in the decoration of Roman domus for the wealthy classes.
The decorative motifs of Roman mosaics were very varied, ranging from geometric shapes to images depicting elements of nature such as trees, gardens, and landscapes, or scenes with human figures based on domestic life or mythology.
