Reproduction of a centurion’s armour from Ancient Rome. The centurions commanded the bulk of the Roman army. Contrary to what may appear from the name, the number of soldiers in command of the centurion was not one hundred, but ranged up to 80 men. They were chosen for their ability to command, courage, temperance, etc. A private soldier could rise through the military ladder to the rank of centurion, on the basis of his war merits.
