Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos, Burgos. Located in the valley of Tabladillo in Burgos, the origins of monastic life in Silos date back to the middle of the 10th century, although its period of greatest splendour was from the end of the 11th century to the beginning of the 13th century, when its Romanesque part was built. From 1041 to 1073, the Riojan monk Domingo Manso, a great promoter and builder, was the abbot of Silos and today holds the ownership of the monastery.
A Benedictine monastery that is still active, its outstanding feature is its exceptional two-storey cloister, built in at least three campaigns.
The sculpture that decorates it is among the most outstanding of Spanish Romanesque architecture. The Romanesque church practically disappeared under the 18th-century neoclassical church, which follows the plans of Ventura RodrÃguez.
