In Greek mythology, the Gorgon Medusa is a terrifying mythological creature with snake hair and a petrifying gaze. Described as one of the three Gorgon sisters, the myth tells that she was originally a beautiful woman punished by Athena for a romantic encounter with Poseidon in the goddess’s temple. Perseus cut off her head and used it as a weapon, ultimately delivering it to Athena, who placed it on her shield. In other representations, Athena wears the head of Medusa on her breastplate or aegis. Medusa became a symbol of danger, and her image has transcended mythology, influencing art, literature, and popular culture throughout the centuries.
