The Gorgon Medusa, in Greek mythology, is a terrifying mythological creature with snake hair and a petrifying gaze. Described as one of the three Gorgon sisters, the myth tells that she was originally a beautiful woman punished by Athena due to a love affair with Poseidon in the goddess’s temple. The curse transformed her hair into venomous snakes and condemned those who looked at her to turn into stone.
In the myth, the hero Perseus, with the help of the gods, defeated Medusa by using his shield as a mirror to locate her without having to look directly at her. Perseus cut off her head and used it as a weapon, finally delivering it to Athena, who placed it on her shield. In other representations of Athena, Medusa’s head appears on the goddess’s breastplate or aegis. Medusa became a symbol of danger, and her image has transcended mythology, influencing art, literature, and popular culture throughout the centuries.
The figure of this mythological character has inspired numerous works of art from Classical Antiquity to the present day. A sculpture like this head of Medusa brings a unique touch of distinction to our place of rest and work, such as a library or an office.
Reproductions of sculptures depicting mythological figures, such as this Medusa statue, allow us to evoke and bring the grandeur of classical antiquity to our present days.
