Ulysses, in Greek Odysseus, is the main character in Homer’s other great epic, the Odyssey, which tells the story of the journey full of vicissitudes in his quest to return to the island of Ithaca, Odysseus’ homeland, once the Trojan War is over. Ulysses will be put to the test time and again by the god Poseidon, and in encounters with monsters, sorceresses and creatures such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, the magician Circe and the sirens, he will use his wits and cunning to emerge victorious. In this case, by getting himself tied to the mast by his companions, who had their ears plugged so as not to fall under the spell of their songs.
