The god Ares (Mars in the Roman culture) is the god of war, courage and personal improvement. Ares had a chariot pulled by four immortal stallions with golden bridles that breathed fire. Among the other gods, Ares was renowned for his bronze armour and the spear he wielded in battle.  His favourite animal was the dog. In classical Greek art his usual attributes were a crested helmet and a spear with which he easily defeated his enemies.
