Maenads-Series of three reliefs. This set can be hung to decorate walls or as a headboard for a bed. These reliefs representing three models of maenads: one with a sword and lamb, another maenad with a tambourine, and the third with a staff and lamb.

In Greek mythology, the Maenads are divine female beings closely related to the god Dionysus (Bacchus for the Romans), who was considered to originate from Thrace and Phrygia. The first maenads were nymphs who were responsible for his upbringing and were later possessed by him, inspiring them with mystical madness. On the other hand, the Bacchae would be mortal women who emulate the maenads, dedicating themselves to the orgiastic cult of Dionysus. However, there is no unanimity in these meanings; in many sources, Maenads and Bacchae are synonymous, with Bacchae understood as the Latin term for Maenad.

Maenads are frequently represented in ancient Greek and Roman art, in fresco painting and pottery, in reliefs and sculptures, or in mosaics. They are often portrayed dancing in frenzy, dressed in flowing tunics and ivy crowns, and holding the thyrsus (staff) and other objects related to Dionysus and wine, such as pitchers or grapes. The maenads represent the celebration of the Dionysian cult, where spiritual liberation, ecstasy, and enthusiasm (en-theos, god within oneself) were experienced, the experience of union with the divine. Representations of maenads in ancient art provide a fascinating window into the artistic expression of beliefs and mysticism of ancient Greece.
