In this lion’ s head figure, we reproduce one of the gargoyles that served as a drainage system from the Temple of Victory (Nike) in Himera, in the city of Palermo in Sicily (Italy). The original is exhibited in the archaeological museum of Palermo.
The Greek temple of Nike in Himera was built between 480 and 470 B.C. Himera was a city in Magna Graecia, located in the archaeological area of Termini Imerese, belonging to Palermo, the capital of Sicily (Italy). The building has been identified as the temple ordered to be built by Gelon, the tyrant of Syracuse who led the Greek coalition that defeated the Carthaginian invading army in the Battle of Himera. Probably dedicated to Athena, the complex was likely burned and destroyed in 409 B.C. when the Carthaginians invaded the city of Himera.
