It is believed that in every Roman home there was a Lararium, a Roman altar. These shrines or altars were dedicated to the household gods and the spirits of the ancestors. Depending on the profession, all Romans had a particular god as patron. A craftsman for example sacrificed daily to the goddess Minerva on his personal Roman altarpiece bread, fruit and other things, a blacksmith appealed to the deity Vulcan for support in his smithy and a poet prayed to the god Apollo and awaited the kiss of the Muses.
