Homer was an ancient Greek epic poet, author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, and is considered one of the most important poets of Ancient Greece, laying the foundations of Western literature.

Homer (circa 9th-8th centuries BC) was an aedo of the archaic period, considered the author who wrote down two epic poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey, which until then had been transmitted only orally. These poems narrate events dating back centuries, to the war in which the Greeks fought against the city of Troy (Turkey), an event that would have occurred during the Mycenaean kingdoms (13th-11th centuries BC).

The Iliad narrates a part of the Trojan War, focusing on the character of Achilles and his wrath, which leads him to make decisions that change the course of the war. The Odyssey, on the other hand, narrates Odysseus’s journey to find his way back home to the island of Ithaca after the end of the Trojan War.

Troy was considered a mythical place for centuries until the excavations of the hill of Hisarlik (Turkey) by Heinrich Schliemann in 1871, placing the events narrated by Homer around the 13th century BC.
