Hippocrates was a Greek physician and philosopher considered the father of Western medicine. He was born on the island of Cos around 460 BC and founded a school of medicine in which observation and clinical reasoning were taught as the basis for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. His best known legacy is the Hippocratic Oath, which sets out the ethical principles that should guide medical practice.
The Hippocratic Oath is an ethical medical text dating from the 5th century BC that has been used as a model for the professional conduct of physicians throughout the world. This oath has become a symbol of medical ethics and has influenced the formation of the values of modern medicine. In its original form, the oath focused on the physician’s obligation to protect the life and health of patients, and was based on the principles of honesty, integrity and confidentiality. Although it has undergone various modifications over the centuries, the Hippocratic Oath remains a fundamental ethical reference for the practice of medicine.
