Hercules child sculpture. Reproduction of the original work “The Young Hercules” by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), which depicts the hero in his childhood fighting two snakes.
Hercules, known as Heracles in Greece, was a hero and demigod, son of the god Zeus and a mortal woman, Alcmene. The goddess Hera, wife of Zeus, jealous of Hercules’ birth, sent two snakes to his cradle to kill him, but the infant rose and killed the two snakes with his own hands, demonstrating his legendary strength.
The base features representations of the Twelve Labors of Hercules, which were assigned to him by King Eurystheus as seemingly impossible tasks that the demigod nevertheless managed to complete: the Nemean Lion, the Lernaean Hydra, the Ceryneian Hind, the Erymanthian Boar, the Stymphalian Birds, the Augean Stables, the Cretan Bull, the Mares of Diomedes, the Belt of Hippolyta, the Cattle of Geryon, the Apples of the Hesperides, and finally, bringing Cerberus, the guard dog of the gates of the underworld, to Eurystheus.
Decorating with reproductions like this statue of young Hercules brings the cultural and aesthetic richness of classical art to our homes. When we incorporate these sculptures into our spaces, both indoors in our living rooms and lobbies, libraries and offices, as well as outdoors in gardens and on terraces, we infuse an air of nobility and serenity into our favorite corners.
