Reproduction of the head of the Roman goddess Minerva (Athena for the Greeks) from the 1st century AD. The original piece is located in the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona.
Minerva is the Roman Goddess identified with the Hellenic Athena. We find her first in Etruria and she was introduced in Rome, according to tradition, by King Numa. She was part of the so-called Capitoline Triad where she was alongside Jupiter and Juno, the ultimate expression of state religion. Her attributes are similar to those of the Greek Pallas Athena: depicted standing and armed with a helmet, spear, aegis, and shield featuring the head of the Gorgon. She presided over all intellectual activity, primarily teaching. Also considered the patroness of artisans and often the tutelary Goddess of many cities, as in the case of the ancient Roman city of Tarraco.
With these statues representing gods and goddesses of classical mythology, we evoke and bring to our days the grandeur of ancient Greece and Rome.
