Medusa, with her hair of snakes and petrifying gaze, is a terrifying creature from Greek mythology. The myth tells that she was originally a beautiful woman, one of the three Gorgon sisters, who was punished by Athena for defiling the goddess’s temple after a romantic encounter with Poseidon. The curse cast by Athena transformed her hair into venomous snakes and condemned those who looked at her to turn to stone.
In the myth, the hero Perseus was tasked with confronting Medusa, whom he defeated by cutting off her head, using his shield as a mirror to locate her without looking at her directly. Perseus eventually gave the head to Athena. In numerous representations of the goddess, Medusa’s head appears on her chest or aegis, while in others, she carries it on her shield.
