The head of Apollo that we offer is a reproduction of the full-body sculpture of the Apollo Belvedere, named because after its discovery in the late 15th century, during the Renaissance, it was exhibited in the Vatican’s Belvedere Courtyard. It is supposed to be a copy of an original in bronze attributed to the Greek sculptor Leochares.
In Greek and Roman mythology, Apollo is one of the most important and multifaceted Olympian gods. The ideal of the kouros (beardless youth), Apollo has been recognized variously as the god of light and the sun; truth and prophecy; archery; medicine and healing; music, poetry, and the arts. Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto and the twin brother of the virgin huntress Artemis. He is known as Apulu in Etruscan mythology, influenced by the Greek. Apollo was worshipped in the ancient religions of Greece and Rome, as well as in modern Neo-Hellenism.
