Reproduction of a medieval relief of the Descent from the Cross, dated 1178, from Parma Cathedral, Italy. The original is the work of Benedetto Antelami and was on a column in the cathedral.
It is considered to be a transitional work between the Romanesque and Gothic styles. It depicts the moment described in the Gospel of St John where the descent from the cross of the body of Jesus Christ is described, surrounded by the biblical characters: on the left is St Joseph of Arimathea, behind him the personification of the Church holding the chalice with the blood of Jesus, the archangel Gabriel, St John and the three Marys.
To the right of the cross is Nicodemus on a ladder, next to him the personification of the Synagogue, the archangel Saint Raphael and Roman legionaries. At each end is a head surrounded by a garland, allegories of the Sun and the Moon.
This work is characterised by the transition from the rigidity of Romanesque to Gothic art, which is less hieratic and endowed with greater dynamism and movement.
