The Greek goddess Hestia (Vesta in Rome) is the goddess of the home and the family. She is the firstborn of the Titans Cronus and Rhea and sister of Zeus. She was responsible for protecting the family, promoting marital happiness and maintaining harmony in homes, temples and cities. She is often depicted protecting a fire, the centre of the family hearth, symbol of warmth and light, the heart and reflection of the life-giving light of the Sun. She was worshipped on an altar in the home with a fire that had to be kept burning for ever. The Roman Vestals were a female priestly body who saw to it that the fire of Vesta did not go out and protected Rome.
