Reproduction of a figure of the Goddess Demeter on a white Corinthian column.
In Ancient Greece the goddess Demeter (Ceres in Rome) is the goddess of agriculture and the fertility of the fields. Her name, Dea Meter, means Mother Goddess. One of her attributes is usually ears of wheat, which appear in many representations as an offering. Together with her daughter Persephone, she is associated with the Eleusinian Mysteries where she was worshipped, perhaps in connection with the mysteries of life and death, regeneration and rebirth.
