Reproduction of a figure of the Goddess Aphrodite on a Corinthian column.
Aphrodite (Venus in Rome) is the Greek goddess of love. A myth tells of her birth from the foam of the sea that was generated by the fall of the genitals of Uranus, the god of Heaven, when he was castrated by his son the titan Cronus. She married the god of fire and smithing, Hephaestus (Vulcan), and had numerous lovers, including Ares (Mars), the god of war, and the beautiful Adonis. She is usually accompanied by Cupid and a retinue made up of the three Graces, the Hours, etc. Her animal is the dove and one of her symbols is the oyster or venera.
