The Wounded Achilles (1825) by Filippo Albacini (1777–1858), part of the private collection in The Devonshire Collections, Chatsworth House. This figure depicts Achilles wounded by an arrow in his heel, his weak point.
Achilles was the most famous of the Achaean heroes, great-grandson of Zeus, grandson of Eanor, and son of Peleus and the Titaness Thetis, a sea deity. According to poets following the Iliad, Thetis anointed her son with ambrosia and then held him over fire, although other versions suggest she dipped him in the river Styx, making him invulnerable except for one weak spot, the heel, where he was held. Achilles, the personification of the Greek warrior, was represented as a strong and agile young man, with a slender figure, Herculean form, curly hair, and a beautiful face. Homer begins the Iliad by invoking the Muse to sing of Achilles’ anger when he retreats to his tent, refusing to fight after a dispute with King Agamemnon over the possession of the slave Briseis.
Decorating with reproductions of sculptures representing characters from classical antiquity, like this sculpture of Achilles, is an elegant and timeless way to add a touch of sophistication to our home’s spaces.
