The Allegory of Winter is a marble sculpture created by the sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon in 1783. The original is 145 cm tall and is housed in the Musée Fabre in Montpellier. The marble figure is part of a series of models representing allegories of summer and winter. Unlike Baroque allegories of winter in the form of an old man or woman warming by the fire, Houdon chose the figure of a young woman. She has a cloth wrapped around her head and upper body, while her abdomen and legs are bare. The closed leg posture harkens back to the ancient motif of the ‘Venus pudica’, but the partial nudity is a consistent element of the winter allegory. Finally, Houdon used these starting points as a justification for creating a sculpture that soon gained great popularity.
Decorating with reproductions of classical sculptures, such as this figure of the Allegory of Winter, is an elegant and timeless way to add a touch of sophistication to our home. These figures enrich our favorite spaces, both indoors (libraries, offices, or living rooms) and outdoors (terraces and gardens).
Decorating with classical art is a great choice that brings a sense of beauty and historical legacy to any space in our home.
