Reproduction of a statue of Anubis, the Egyptian god with the head of a jackal. Anubis was the guide of the souls through the paths of the Beyond and who weighed the heart of the deceased on the scales at the Judgement presided over by Osiris, placing on the other pan the feather of Maat, the goddess of Harmony, Truth and Justice. If the heart weighed more than the feather, the soul of the deceased was devoured by a monster; if it was lighter, the deceased became part of the cortege of the gods.
Anubis also ruled over the process of mummification; he was the first to mummify a corpse, that of Osiris, murdered by his brother Seth. The priests consecrated to the office of mummification wore masks of the jackal god.
