Reproduction of a Roman statuette of Mercury. The original is in the Musée Antique d’Arles.
The figure represents the Greek god Hermes, the Roman Mercury, messenger of the gods, after the model of the Greek sculptor Polyclitus. The god holds a purse in his right hand, symbolising commerce. He also holds in his left hand the caduceus (a winged staff with two intertwined snakes).
