Recreation and reproduction of a figure of a Virgin and Child Jesus in gothic style.

The Virgin and Child Jesus is one of the main themes of Christian iconography. It represents the Virgin Mary together with the Child Jesus, her son. After some initial resistance and controversy, the formula “Mother of God” (Theotokos) was officially adopted by the Christian church at the Council of Ephesus, 431. The earliest surviving depiction of the Virgin and Child may be the mural painting in the Catacomb of Priscilla, Rome, which shows the seated Virgin suckling the Child, who in turn turns her head to look at the viewer.
