Leonidas I ( c. 540 BC – 480 ) was a Spartan king, famous for dying heroically along with 300 of his warriors and another 1100 soldiers from other Greek polis in the defence of the pass of Thermopylae against the Persian army of King Xerxes during the Second Medical Wars (480 – 478 BC).
