Artemis of Ephesus.
A copy of the statue of Artemis from the Selçuk Museum in Ephesus, which is a Roman copy in marble of a (lost) Greek replica of a xoanon from the Geometric period. A xoanon is a wooden votive sculpture that was made in the Archaic period of Ancient Greece and was associated with temples.
Original from the 2nd century AD, Temple of Artemis.
In classical times, Artemis was a lunar goddess, sister of the god Apollo. However, in this representation, as the protector of the city of Ephesus (present-day Turkey), she appears as a mother goddess with attributes related to fertility.
This piece was found in the Temple of Artemis in the city of Ephesus. This temple, of great dimensions and beautiful architecture, was considered one of the seven wonders of the world. The original of this piece is in the Archaeological Museum of Ephesus (Turkey).
