Reproduction of a statue of Amenophis III (Amenhotep III, reigned from c. 1390 – 1353 BC), king of Egypt of the XVIIIth Dynasty (16th to 13th century BC).
The reign of Amenophis III is characterised by internal stability, peace and external diplomatic relations, prosperity, artistic splendour and a building boom. During his reign Egypt established itself as a power in the Middle East, trade relations and tribute brought with them an era of prosperity and wealth. In domestic politics he tried to counteract the growing power of the priests of Amun. After his death he was succeeded by Amenhotep IV, who changed his name to Akhnaton and replaced the polytheistic cult with a kind of monotheism around the god Aten, the solar disc.
