The Roman author Apuleius in his novel The Golden Ass tells the story of Psyche (“Soul” in Greek, the personification of a soul full of love or, in former times, of a butterfly bearing the same name). Psyche, so the story goes, was the beautiful daughter of a king. The fame of her beauty aroused the jealousy of Aphrodite, who, in order to get rid of her rival, commissioned her son Cupid to pay the princess a visit and inspire her love for some common man. Cupid, however, falls in love with Psyche, who, after breaking her vow to the god of love, faces various trials to win back her beloved.
