Cleopatra VII was the last queen of Egypt. A descendant of Ptolemy, general of Alexander the Great, she was noted for her vast culture, keen intelligence and diplomatic skills. She was the lover of Julius Caesar, thanks to whom she had ascended to the throne. After Caesar’s assassination she allied herself with the successor triumvirate, becoming Mark Antony’s lover and his ally in his civil war against Octavian. After her defeat with Mark Antony at the Battle of Actius, Cleopatra committed suicide, as did her lover, and Egypt was invaded by the troops of the victor, Octavian, the future emperor Octavian Augustus.
