The Black Prince, Edward of Woodstock (1330-1376), was Prince of Wales, son and successor to King Edward III of England and father of Richard II. He died before he came to the throne, which was eventually inherited by his son Richard. His nickname of the “Black Prince” appears in chronicles from the 16th century onwards, alluding to the colour of his armour.
