Reproduction of the statue of St. James the Apostle from the Portico de la Gloria, Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.
St. James the Greater was one of the twelve Apostles, a disciple of Jesus Christ. In the 9th century there is a story about a hermit, Pelayo, who, after seeing lights in a field (Campus Stellae, “Field of Stars” = Compostela), discovers the remains of the apostle and two of his disciples, notifying the bishop of the nearby town of Iria Flavia. In the 11th century, Alfonso II made Compostela a centre of pilgrimage for Christianity. A sanctuary was first erected on the site and later a cathedral, in whose Romanesque-style Portico de la Gloria (12th century) a statue of St. James with a pilgrim’s staff was placed.
Today the Pilgrim’s Way of St. James is still trodden by many pilgrims.
