Aesculapius is the god of medicine, called Asclepius in Greece. Son of Apollo, he is depicted accompanied by a snake. He is depicted with a beard and a solemn gesture, and it was believed that he descended at night to perform cures in his sanctuaries, known as Asclepeion, which served as sanatoriums.
