Mirror corresponding to the area of Sardinia, from the series of cartouches in the Vatican Map Room. It is perhaps the most beautiful and certainly the largest atlas ever painted.
In the 16th century Pope Gregory XII, to whom we owe the publication of the current Gregorian calendar, commissioned the painting of the Vatican Map Room. The legends of these maps are inscribed on cartouches.
