The Birth of Venus is one of Botticelli’s most famous works, painted for a member of the Medici family, to decorate one of their country palaces.

Venus is the goddess of love, she appears in the centre of the composition on a huge shell; her long hair covers her private parts while with her right arm she tries to cover her breast. The moment presented by the artist is the arrival of the goddess, after her birth, on the island of Cythera, pushed by the wind as described by Homer, who served as a literary source for Botticelli’s work.
