The sculpture reproduced here on a small scale is the famous Moses by the brilliant Italian sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564).
Executed in 1513-1536, it is one of the masterpieces of Renaissance art. Measuring 2.35 m, the original sculpture has been in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli (Rome) since its installation in the 16th century. Although it was originally intended to be placed on the tomb of Pope Julius II in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, in the end the Rovere family, from whom the Pope came, destined this sculpture for the church of which they were patrons, where it remains to this day.
It is said that when it was finished, in the face of such perfection, Michelangelo tapped the knee of his work exhorting it with the command: “Speak!”; such is his mastery that it seems that at any moment Moses is going to come to life, to get up and walk.
